The result is an astonishing mix of reactions.

The simple intervention replaces two streetlights with theatre spotlights and instantly transfoms the street into a stage and passers-by into performers, somewhere between spectacle and surveillance. This intentionally subtle alteration to street lighting suggests on one hand the latent potential of public realm as places of interaction and celebration and on the other hand offers an alternative approach to city’s lighting as more than securitarian.

Yolanda Domínguez is a Spanish artist who works from what is disquieting, handling situations that are sensitive and disturbing for the spectator. Her aim is to generate social criticism and a reaction.

“Poses” is a direct criticism of the absurd and artificial world of glamour and of fashion that magazines present. Specifically, the highly-distorted image of women that they transmit through models that do not represent real women and that avoid all those who are not within their restricted parameters.

These images are virtually the only feminine reference in the mass media and they have a great influence in both men and women when building our roles in terms of behavior and ways of thinking.

Using these impossible stances of the fashion publishing houses as a symbol of how grotesque and unreal this industry is, a group of real women transfer these poses to daily scenes: the queue of a museum, the supermarket or the bus stop, sparking off the reaction of the spectators (on the other hand, regular consumers of these images).

The aim: to make it clear how ridiculous, and at times harmful, it can be to follow these models that the world of glamour impose on us.

You Are What You Eat, a project by Mark Menjivar, is a series of portraits made by examining the interiors of refrigerators in homes across the United States.

He explains about the project:

For three years I traveled around the country exploring food issues. The more time I spent speaking and listening to individual stories, the more I began to think about the foods we consume and the effects they have on us as individuals and communities.

An intense curiosity and questions about stewardship led me to begin to make these unconventional portraits. A refrigerator is both a private and a shared space. One person likened the question, “May I photograph the interior of your fridge?” to asking someone to pose nude for the camera.

Each fridge is photographed “as is”. Nothing added, nothing taken away.

These are portraits of the rich and the poor. Vegetarians, Republicans, members of the NRA, those left out, the under appreciated, former soldiers in Hitler’s SS, dreamers, and so much more. We never know the full story of one’s life.

Robot Flâneur is a project made by London-based writer and programmer James Bridle, which claims to be an explorer for Google Street View. It allows you to virtually stroll the streets of nine different world cities. The website tends to re-examine Charles Baudelaire’s concept of the flâneur — a person who walks the city in order to experience it. The urban street views that are presented change every 30 seconds, so the only thing you have to do is lay back and passively explore the urban atmosphere.

Be Your Own Souvenir, a project by Barcelona based blablabLAB.

This past January, the installation connected passersby with the arts and technology, allowing people to become active collaborators with blablabLAB . Each visitor assumed the dual role of producer and consumer, with the help of customized software . The system invited each guest (acting as a human statue) to be filmed in front of three kinect sensors for a full 360-degree scan. Real-time 3-D data was used to duplicate the best image of a subject, then code was applied to turn the data points into a volumetric 3-D model. Moments later, the RapMan 3.1 3D printer ejected a figurine-sized version of the participant. blablabLAB describes the project’s aim:

The project mimics the informal artistic context of this popular street, human sculptures and craftsmen, bringing diverse realities and enabling greater empathy between the agents that cohabit in the public space.
